How to Avoid a Truck’s Blind Spots
Bill Allen | June 1, 2016 | Truck Accidents
In the hustle and bustle of a daily commute, it can be easy to forget the dangers large commercial trucks pose on the highway. Due to the sheer nature and size of a semi-truck, it’s extremely important that drivers take the necessary precautions to ensure that their drive is as safe as possible. The best way to avoid getting stuck in a potentially risky situation is to avoid a truck’s blind spots.
Learn About The “No-Zones”
An 18-wheeler truck has a few blind spots that you can easily navigate once you understand where they’re located. These spots are sometimes referred to as a truck’s “no-zones.” The area directly in front of the truck, behind the truck and next to the passenger door are all “no-zones.”
Practice Caution When Passing
If you’re stuck behind a truck and wish to pass, try passing on the left as opposed to the right. As previously mentioned, the right side of a truck is home to its biggest “no-zone.” The blind spot directly beside the passenger door extends to the end of the truck’s trailer and spans across two lanes. When it is safe to do so, pass on the left – be clear with your intentions and use your blinker.
Don’t Rush
This tip is especially important in times when you feel rushed and are tempted to quickly cut out behind a truck and cut back in front of it. Although it may feel like an inconvenience to be driving behind a slow truck, you need to prioritize your safety and the safety of drivers around you. A good rule of thumb to follow is to make sure you can see the entire front of the truck in your review mirror whenever merging into the truck’s lane.
