What Florida Cities Have the Most Car Accidents?

Florida is home to sunny weather, ample waterways, and endless entertainment to explore, which makes it a wonderful place to live and a popular tourist destination. There are over 22 million residents, and Florida proudly hosts over 140 million visitors annually.

Unfortunately, the influx of visitors, paired with crowded roadways around the most popular cities and tourist destinations, can lead to a high volume of car accidents. The state sees just under 400,000 crashes each year, on average, resulting in nearly a quarter of a million injuries and over 3,500 fatalities.

Some areas of the state are at higher risk for accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Which cities in Florida have the most vehicle collisions?

Miami

With over six million residents, the Miami metro area is the largest urban center in the state, and unsurprisingly, it also ranks high for car accidents.

Due in no small part to this major city, Miami-Dade County has the unfortunate distinction of being home to the largest number of vehicle crashes in the state, with over 59,000 per year, on average, resulting in over 27,000 injuries and over 300 fatalities, according to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).

Tampa

Tampa is the largest city in Hillsborough County, with just over 400,000 residents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ranks it as the tenth worst city for drivers in the U.S. Unsurprisingly, as the FLHSMV reports, Tampa is a major contributor to the over 26,000 crashes, more than 18,000 injuries, and 200-plus fatalities that occur in Hillsborough County each year.

Orlando

Orlando is a well-known tourist destination, with several theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios that have made it an entertainment hot spot in the state.

Although Florida Demographics reports that the resident population is only about 320,000, the city sees an influx of over 70 million visitors each year. This is certainly a factor contributing to over 25,000 vehicle crashes in Orange County annually, along with over 20,000 injuries and nearly 200 fatalities, as reported by the FLHSMV.

Boca Raton

Boca Raton may be best known as a sleepy retirement community with a population of around 100,000 per Florida Demographics, but it’s no stranger to accident scenarios like head-on and rear-end crashes

Along with other sizable communities like West Palm Beach, this city contributes to nearly 24,000 car accidents each year in Palm Beach County, resulting in over 14,000 injuries and more than 200 fatalities on average, as recorded by the FLHSMV.

Jacksonville

This Duvall County city is home to just under a million residents, according to Florida Demographics, and along with Jacksonville Beach and other towns in the Jacksonville metro area, the FLHSMV reports it contributes to over 23,000 auto collisions in the county annually, resulting in roughly 14,000 injuries and just under 200 fatalities.

Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Pompano Beach

By itself, Fort Lauderdale, with over 180,000 residents per data from Florida Demographics, may not have the most accidents. However, when paired with other coastal towns of over 100,000 residents, including Hollywood and Pompano Beach, this oceanside locale contributes to a sizable number of vehicle collisions in Broward County.

When the stats for these cities are combined, this county ranks second for total car accidents, with an annual average of over 40,000, including nearly 22,000 injuries and just under 300 fatalities, according to data from the FLHSMV.

What To Do After a Florida Car Accident

When an accident occurs, the first thing you should do is seek medical attention to address your injuries.

If you’re able, you should gather contact information, witness statements, and evidence at the scene or have someone else do it for you. From there, you can file a police report and contact a qualified attorney to discuss your options for seeking compensation to cover your injuries and other losses.
