Florida Gators Fan Falls from Traffic Light After NCAA Championship Win

The Florida Gators secured a hard-fought victory against the Houston Cougars in the 2025 Men’s Basketball National Championship. In the aftermath of the 65-63 point win, fans took to the streets to celebrate. Unfortunately, things took a turn from celebratory to dangerous.

A man who police officers identified as Steven Buchanan, was spotted on camera, climbing up a traffic pole at the intersection of University Avenue and Northwest 17th Street. Once he reached the top of the pole, the man could be spotted bouncing the traffic signal.

In addition to posing a great danger to himself, he also placed others in danger with his stunt. In an attempt to stand, Buchanan fell off the pole and onto the pavement. Fire rescue crews then responded, and he was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigation Into the Florida Fan’s Stunt

The investigation into Buchanan’s actions during the championship celebration is ongoing. However, three others have already been arrested for their alleged post-game conduct, including disorderly intoxication, battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest without violence.

While no arrest has yet been made after the traffic signal stunt, it has been reported that charges are forthcoming from the Gainesville Police Department.

How Gainesville Prepared for the Gators’ Victory

The University of Florida men’s basketball team secured its third title after winning the 2025 championship. With multiple monumental victories throughout the program’s history, the City of Gainesville has experienced several celebrations of basketball excellence in the last two decades. In doing so, the city has developed ways to prepare for rowdy celebrations.

Prior to the game even starting, Gainesville Public Works employees greased poles in an effort to deter people from climbing them. There were also extra patrols placed in the area with police and fire rescue collaborating. The City of Gainesville also sent out a safety memo indicating the locations of road closures. Unfortunately, some injuries and dangerous behavior occurred despite the precautions that were taken.

How to Stay Safe in Post-Game Celebrations

While this year’s March Madness has come to an end, there are likely many more victories on the horizon for the Florida Gators. When participating in post-game celebrations, it is crucial to keep a few safety tips in mind.

Remember to do the following as you prepare to celebrate:

  • Charge your phone
  • Eat beforehand
  • Do not go out alone
  • Plan to use a rideshare or have a designated driver
  • Drink responsibly
  • Dress according to the weather conditions
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Tell a loved one or someone you trust where you’ll be
  • Stay in populated areas
  • Create an emergency plan for if you get separated from your group
  • Have a designated meeting point
  • Don’t walk back home alone

While it may be tempting to engage in risky behavior like the fan who climbed the pole, it is important to be mindful of your surroundings and stay safe even as you enjoy the celebration.
