Florida Drunk Driving Deaths 2025

On average, about 5,168 drunk driving accidents happen in Florida every year. These wrecks injure 3,061 people and kill another 398 individuals. Between 2021 and 2022, the number of alcohol-related traffic deaths increased from 407 to 423.

This number then fell by more than 14 percent, to 363, in 2023. You might wonder–has this downward trend in alcohol deaths continued in recent years?

From 2023 to 2024: Additional Decline in Alcohol Deaths

In 2024, there were noticeably fewer alcohol crashes overall and fewer alcohol-related injuries and deaths than in previous years. The total number of drunk driving accidents decreased from 5,132 to 4,833, and the number of fatalities in alcohol-impaired crashes dropped from 363 to 281.

Finally, while there were 3,104 injuries related to drunk driving crashes in 2023, there were only 2,849 in 2024.

A Continued Decline in Drunk Driving Accidents in 2025

Although there are a few months left in 2025, current drunk driving statistics suggest that the final numbers for 2025 will be lower than those for 2024. So far, there have been 2,678 alcohol-related crashes, which is an average of 334 per month. If this rate were to continue, there would be about 4,017 of these accidents by the end of the year.

Similarly, the number of drunk driving deaths in 2025 is also on track. About 10 fatalities due to drunk driving have been reported each month thus far. If this rate were to continue through the end of the year, only about 120 fatalities would be reported — less than one-half of the number recorded in 2024.

Finally, Florida is presently on track to see about 2,271 injuries caused by drunk drivers this year, approximately 600 fewer than last year.

Why Are the Numbers Decreasing?

Almost every driver in Florida would be relieved to know that fewer individuals are getting hurt and killed by drunk drivers. There may be several reasons to explain this trend:

Increased Education and Awareness

One possible explanation is that government agencies’ public awareness campaigns about the dangers of impaired driving are bearing positive results. Individuals may be less inclined to risk hurting or killing themselves or a friend by driving under the influence.

Increased Transportation Options

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft have become more commonplace in cities across Florida, giving inebriated drivers even more options for getting home after a night out. These services, along with an increased awareness about the risks associated with driving drunk, may be keeping all drivers and passengers more safe.

Increased Enforcement

Increased efforts to detect, arrest, and prosecute impaired drivers are also partly responsible for the decreased DUI numbers. A driver who is serving a jail or prison sentence is clearly not able to drive drunk while they are incarcerated.

Additionally, others who might be tempted to drive while impaired will see the related penalties and think twice about getting behind the wheel after drinking.

The Risk of Drunk Driving Crashes Is Not Yet Eliminated

The number of drunk driving accidents has decreased in recent years, but these preventable tragedies still occur. Moreover, the number of alcohol-impaired driving crashes does not include the number of people who drive under the influence of drugs or a combination of alcohol and drugs.

As a result, while 2025 Florida drunk driving statistics are a cause for optimism, drivers should still exercise caution on the road, especially around holidays, during the summer, and at other times when people may be more likely to drink and drive.

Florida’s drunk driving statistics reveal a cautiously hopeful trend. Over the last several years, the state has seen a steady decline in alcohol-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Still, the fight against drunk driving is not over. Hundreds of people are still injured or killed each year in preventable alcohol-related crashes.
