In 2024, vehicles in the U.S. traveled nearly 3.3 trillion miles. This number grew by about 1% compared to the total vehicle miles traveled in 2023. Unfortunately, many trips end with a traffic collision. Over 39,000 people died in traffic accidents in 2024, and millions suffered injuries.
Some highways accounted for a disproportionate share of these crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Factors like poor weather, dangerous road design, and traffic congestion combine to create conditions where even a minor driving mistake can result in a collision.

Some of the worst interstates in the U.S. are congested and heavily traveled, increasing the risk of crashes from tailgating and unsafe lane changes. The most dangerous highways in America are scattered across the nation. For example, I-95 runs through many major East Coast cities. As a result of its heavy use, it has a very high number of highway crashes.
Conversely, the loneliest highway in America, US-50 in Nevada, is dangerous for a different reason. The flat, monotonous landscape can lull drivers into complacency and lead to inattentiveness. I-4 in Florida
I-4 runs east-west across Florida, connecting Tampa to Daytona Beach. By some measures, this is the most dangerous interstate in the country. Dozens of motorists die in crashes on this highway annually, with most of the crashes occurring in Orlando and Tampa.
Both of these cities experience heavy traffic due to tourists traveling between their hotels and the attractions. Tourists unfamiliar with the area often make abrupt maneuvers. They may also speed to try to beat the crowds. At night, they may cause DUI crashes.
I-45 in Texas
I-45 is a short freeway that runs from Galveston to Dallas. Although it has a few stretches that run through sparsely populated areas, it also passes through the nation’s fourth and ninth most populous cities in Houston and Dallas, respectively. As drivers take I-45s
I-95 in Connecticut and South Carolina
I-95 runs the length of the East Coast from Maine to Florida. It passes through population centers like Boston, New York City, Baltimore, Jacksonville, and Miami. However, two of the most dangerous stretches are not in major cities.
I-95 sees some of its heaviest traffic congestion as it passes through Connecticut. Both commuters and tourists use this stretch of road as they travel between New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
In South Carolina, I-95 misses the state’s largest cities. However, truckers and travelers on this freeway are sometimes tempted to speed specifically because of light traffic. Speeding is dangerous under all conditions, but particularly during the heavy rainstorms common in the southeast.
US-550 in Colorado and New Mexico
US-550, also called the Million Dollar Highway, is one of the most dangerous highways for truckers. It runs between New Mexico and Colorado and climbs to 11,000 feet at its peak. During winter, it can become nearly impassable, jeopardizing the lives of truckers and other motorists.
I-10 in California and Arizona
I-10 runs from Santa Monica, California, to Jacksonville, Florida. Despite running from coast to coast, the most dangerous stretch occurs in the deserts of California and Arizona. Speeding, inattention, and fatigue can lead to accidents as drivers travel this stretch of freeway.
US-1 in Florida
Before I-95, US-1 ran the length of the East Coast. It still exists, running from Fort Kent, Maine, to Key West, Florida. However, since it is not part of the interstate highway system, it lacks many of the features that keep drivers safe at high speeds, such as guardrails, median strips, and overpasses rather than intersections.
Traffic on US-1 is particularly bad in Florida, where it passes through Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. US-1 provides access to many businesses and tourist attractions, such as the beaches on the Atlantic coast.
MT. Rose Highway in Nevada
Mt. Rose Highway is not as well-known as many other highways. However, if you are traveling between Reno and Lake Tahoe, you know how steep and curvy this road is. The grades on this road reach 7% in some locations, making it impassable in winter weather. Even during the summer, brake failures and overheated engines can lead to crashes.
US-192 in Florida
One of Florida’s deadliest highways is also one of its shortest. US-192 runs just 75 miles between Lake County, southwest of Orlando, and the Atlantic Coast. On the way, the highway runs through the Walt Disney World resort area and Kissimmee. Crashes happen frequently on these segments due to traffic congestion, unfamiliarity with the roads, and distracted driving.
Steps To Take After a Crash on America’s Most Dangerous Highways
Every state has unique laws that determine what you must do after a crash. On Florida’s highways, you must stop at the accident scene and exchange information with the other drivers. You must report the accident to the police if it caused injury, death, or property damage of $500 or more to any one party.
You should cooperate with the investigating officers, explaining honestly what happened. At the same time, stick to the facts and refrain from apologizing or speculating about who might be at fault for the crash.
Finally, seek medical attention appropriate for your injuries. If you have life-threatening injuries or feel unable to get home safely, consider asking for an ambulance so doctors can diagnose and treat your injuries.
