The History of Haile Plantation in Gainesville, FL

Haile Plantation, also known as the Historic Haile Homestead, was established in 1854. Cotton planters Thomas Evans and his wife Serena Haile migrated from Camden, South Carolina, and purchased the area. They built a 6,200-square-foot home on the property.

Today, the area is a historic site run by volunteers. It features a visitors center and museum that discusses the plantation’s foundation, the reconstruction era, and Jim Crow.

The plantation area features other favorite tourist spots, including the Florida Museum of Natural History. This museum has beautiful natural exhibits, including the Butterfly Rainforest and Water Shapes Florida. Children learn all about nature in the Discovery Zone.

Kanapaha Botanical Gardens is a popular venue for weddings, conferences, concerts, business meetings, and other social events. The botanical gardens showcase royal bamboo used in Chinese traditions.

Hawkstone Country Club is located to the west of the University of Florida. It offers club memberships and golf guest passes. Visitors can enjoy a bite to eat at the 44 South Bar Grill.
